Daniel is one of the main characters of the story (he shares the spotlight with Emily). He starts the story as a strong and charismatic leader, but for reasons unknown to the rest of the group, he quickly becomes weaker, especially after he is kidnapped by Beothild, and after Clara comes into the picture. Fiercely independent, he refuses to take orders from anyone, and halfway through the story he announces he will be leaving the academy for that same reason, particularly because he has to take orders from Emily. He is a strong fighter, but a poor magician, despite being one of the smartest characters in the story. He has a tendency to become angry and violent over trivial matters.

When Daniel's abilities as a leader begin to decline, Emily steps in as a fierce competitor (after her relationship with Daniel has ended badly). Mike also steps in as a leader, at some points simply taking Daniel's place when his abilities are insufficient. He refuses to reveal his reasons for leaving the academy, even when he is alone with Emily for a considerable amount of time during the story. He becomes listless and lazy, but refuses help or encouragement, leading his companions to believe that he is simply stubborn and arrogant. Even though his abilities have clearly declined, he still complains when he is not the party leader, especially when Emily is his party leader.
