*Note: This version of the plot summary does not include Adam or Nick, because they're new characters. Everyone else is here. A new version will be coming soon.
*Another note: This is not a complete summary. I like to keep people hanging until the whole story's done. =)

The attack on Beothild and the kidnapping of Daniel

For their first mission, Emily, Daniel and Mike are sent to retrieve blueprints from a training camp for troops from the neighboring city-state of Norinia, based in the northernmost part of Pallat. The reigning queen of Norinia, Beothild, has invaded Pallat and stolen the blueprints for Pallat’s underground transportation system. Without these blueprints, according to the headmaster of the academy, Beothild’s plans will be delayed enough to give the Pallat troops an advantage over her.

When the trio goes to the camp, they retrieve the blueprints successfully, but an over-ambitious Daniel (the assigned squad leader) initiates an attack on Beothild. The trio is unsuccessful in defeating Beothild, and Daniel is kidnapped. Emily and Mike learn that Beothild did not kidnap Daniel because of the attack, but because she thought that Daniel was the barbaric (but dead) General Weland, a militia man who had killed all of Beothild’s family and left her pregnant with his child. Mike is seriously wounded in the battle. When Emily calls for help, Nora and Brandon show up to help. It is during this mission that Emily and Daniel’s relationship ends.

The saddened group returns to the academy, where Mike is properly cared for. The headmaster at first berates Emily for allowing the attack to happen, believing that Daniel is dead. Emily reassures him that Daniel has only been kidnapped and that he needs to be rescued. The headmaster calls for Serena (Emily’s best friend, a regionally known magician, but not a student at the academy) and Nora to help Emily and Mike rescue Daniel. He refuses the help of eager Brandon, because Brandon, being one of the youngest students in the school, is too inexperienced to help. Outside of the academy, Clara, who the group (particularly Emily) is surprised to learn has a very close relationship with Daniel, joins in mostly for the fun, and to help rescue Daniel. She’s not much of a fighter or magician, and Nora can’t stand her, but she sticks around anyway. When Mike is fully healed, the party heads off to Beothild’s castle in Norinia to rescue Daniel.

Daniel’s rescue and a celebration

In the meantime, Daniel has done everything in his power to try to convince Beothild that he is not General Weland, but she still keeps him prisoner and tortures him. Daniel eventually goes unconscious while he is being held prisoner. When his rescuers arrive, another battle ensues between them and Beothild. Beothild is finally defeated (Emily dealing the final blow), and while the others free Daniel from his bonds, Emily explains to Beothild that she was mistaken. Beothild promises not to attack Pallat again after learning that General Weland is dead. The party returns to the academy with Daniel.

A celebration dance is held in honor of the successful defeat of Beothild and the return of Daniel, but Emily isn’t in much of a mood for dancing—she’s still lamenting over her personal loss of Daniel, especially after spying on him and Clara in the garden outside the academy. Still, Brandon convinces her to have one dance with him, and Emily temporarily forgets about her sadness.

The Aureala academy under seige

A few days later, the Pallat academy is surprised to find several Aureala academy students  knocking on their door, seeking refuge. Lahna, who is leading the refugee students from Aureala,  informs the Pallat headmaster that the militia in Aureala (that General Weland was in before he was killed) has taken over the academy to use it as a base for attacking Pallat, Norinia and a smaller city-state, Ebell. Most of the students there are being held hostage, but she and the students with her were the only few that managed to escape. Pallat’s headmaster grants Lahna and the refugee students permission to stay at the Pallat academy, and he meets with his top committee members to decide what to do to help the Aureala academy out of their situation.

When Beothild hears of the situation, she also steps in to help as a trained sorceress. The headmaster sends Emily, Daniel, Mike, Nora, Brandon, Lahna and Serena to the Aureala academy to find out what’s going on—Clara tags along as well. Beothild teaches all of the magic-teachable students several powerful spells before they go off to fight. They split up into two parties: Emily leads Daniel, Clara and Serena, while Mike leads Brandon, Nora and Lahna. There is a lot of tension between Emily and Daniel when Emily is Daniel’s squad leader, and Daniel often complains that he should have been the other squad leader instead of Mike. There is also noticeable tension between Mike and Lahna, who have recently ended a three-year-long relationship.

The liberation of the Aureala academy

The story switches between Emily’s party and Mike’s party. They split up between the two parts of the academy in search of the new general of the militia, General Widsith. Emily’s party tackles the basement and first floor of the academy, while Mike’s party takes the second and third floors. Both parties find students hiding in classrooms and dormitories, holding keys to the elevators and locked rooms.

Emily’s party is the first to find Widsith. They battle, but Widsith escapes to one of the upper floors of the academy. Emily’s party takes off after him. Mike’s party is the next to find him on the third floor, and they engage in battle. Emily’s party joins them, and the parties take turns battling Widsith and his allies until he is defeated.

The death of Emily

Just as Widsith is dealt the final blow, he attacks Emily and knocks her out. At first, it looks like a normal KO in battle, but Emily does not respond to any recovery magic cast on her after the battle. Emily is presumed dead, and the deeply saddened parties take her body back to the Pallat academy. Lahna stays behind to counsel the students at her academy that were held hostage.

Pallat’s headmaster, believing that there is still something that can be done for Emily, places her body in a special chamber where it can be preserved. Brandon claims to know a doctor in Ebell that can save Emily, but the Pallat headmaster refuses to allow Brandon to take Emily’s body on such a long journey. The militia in Aureala is still strong as well, despite the defeat of their leader, and the headmaster does not want to risk the loss of another student.

Brandon doesn’t listen to the headmaster. He convinces Serena, Mike and Daniel to accompany him on the journey to Ebell, and Clara tags along as well. Brandon steals Emily’s body out of the chamber and, carrying her on his back, heads out for Ebell in the middle of the night with his party.

The journey to Ebell

Mike, Daniel and Serena are the fighting party on the journey, but Clara temporarily fills in when a party member is knocked out in battle. Brandon does not fight at all, but continues to care for Emily. The party becomes hopelessly lost in the thick forests that separate Pallat and Ebell, and Brandon loses all hope of saving Emily.

Emily’s revival

The party finally finds their way out of the forest and ends up at Pallat’s Point. While the rest of the party is resting nearby, Brandon takes Emily’s body to the end of the cliff. He falls asleep with her there. When the sun rises, Emily’s angel comes down and wakes Brandon up. Emily then repossesses her body, and she wakes up.
